Issue 46 (June-August 09)

COVER ARTIST: Jerry Novesky

FEATURES

Working toward a win-win: landed gentry, landless farmers
The family farm--or rather the family on its own farm--is the basis of a quintessential American image. But this Jeffersonian ideal doesn't fit modern economic reality: The high cost of owning land, particularly in areas like the Hudson Valley, coupled with close to subsistence-level commodity prices, has made owning the land they work unrealistic for some farmers here and elsewhere. But fair leases and good relations with landowners can make this a positive situation for everyone involved.
