Isamu
240 Main Street, Beacon
(845) 440-0002
The former location of Tonique (previously OII) has been transformed again--this time into a spare, Zen-like contemporary Japanese setting. The menu merges Japanese and Chinese cuisines, so whether you're in the mood for sushi or stir fry, udon or lo mein, seafood terryaki or seafood delight, the choice is available. Eat in or take out, reasonable prices, a subdued ambiance and lots of menu choices are making this a popular lunch and dinner spot. Open daily.
The Wherehouse
119 Liberty Street, Newburgh
(845) 561-7240
The historic Washington's Headquarters/Liberty Street neighborhood of Newburgh has seen a resurgence in businesses over the past few years and now there's yet another eatery to welcome visitors: a funky, '60s-themed pub, replete with classic rock posters and vintage vinyl LP covers. (When was the last time you saw the original LP cover of It's a Beautiful Day?) The offering is an affordable menu of American comfort food--think fried chicken, meat loaf, burgers and slow-cooked BBQ. The menu is extensive. Starters cover a range of ethnic bites from perogies to samosas to wings. On the vegetarian side, there's Indian-spiced chickpea stew, slow-simmered lentils, brown rice and a choice of salads. Popular desserts include the vanilla bean cheesecake from neighboring Heart's Delight Bakery (below). Open for lunch and dinner. Two rooms in the back offer special settings for private parties. Live music weekends. Closed Sundays.
Heart's Delight Bakery
89 Liberty Street, Newburgh
(845) 561-2205
A retired legal secretary, Mary D. Lewis began selling her cheesecakes at the urging of friends. A Brooklyn girl who grew up on Junior's cheesecakes, Lewis developed a passion for perfecting recipes of her own and began selling to corporate customers and at a popular Brooklyn restaurant and coffeehouse. She "retired" to Newburgh and opened Heart's Delight Bakery in April, where her New York-style, Key lime and sweet potato cheesecakes are winning new fans. Other desserts include brownies, pound cakes, lemon breads and cookies. Open Tuesday through Sunday 10-6.
